Don Pepin Garcia Black Robusto 1979 premium cigars are handcrafted in the classic Cuban puro tradition with an all Nicaraguan-grown tobacco blend highlighted by a dark, flavorful Habana Rosado wrapper. Produced at Don Pepin's factory in Esteli, Nicaragua using a diverse blend of Nicaraguan longfillers and binder, the smoke is thick and creamy dominated by a strong cedar flavor. The cigar becomes more complex as it smokes, revealing notes of spice and coffee on a long finish with a rich, sweet tobacco aroma.

As far as I know, this was my first foray into the world of Don Pepin Garcia’s line of cigars. Read on to see how the Cuban Classic fared in my most recent review.

Hearing the name of Don Pepin Garcia, most cigar smokers will automatically recognize the name, even if they are not familiar with his lines of cigars. Being that I fall into the category of recognition but not having the opportunity of smoking any of his cigars, I decided to do a blind target with his line and ended up with his Cuban Classic.

Like many of the cigars I have had the opportunity to review, the Cuban Classic had excellent construction with zero construction issues. The textured, smooth feeling brown wrapper really helped highlight the slightly oversized band.

Using a punch and wooden match to light the cigar, I was immediately greeted with a strong burst of spicy, peppery notes. Accompanying the pepper were also hints of coffee, which is interesting because about 30 minutes into the cigar, my wife brought me a cup of coffee. The cup of coffee paired very well with this cigar, almost like this cigar was made specifically to be matched to each other. I did notice that once the peppery notes did subside about 20 minutes in, the flavors of the cigar did dip a bit throughout the rest of the cigars smoke, even though this is a more medium to full bodied smoke. It wasn’t anything that was a deal breaker for the cigar but I can’t help wonder if letting the cigar age a bit would help heighten the flavors.

I did find that in using a punch, I had a slightly tight draw throughout the whole of smoking this cigar. There was also a slightly uneven burn at the start of the cigar but it did even out within 10-15 minutes. Another high point of this cigar that I was found was the almost solid, attractive white ash that stayed with the cigar until I found it necessary to flake it off.

Recommendations: While I would buy this cigar again, I think there are others out there that I would select first over this one. If I was drinking quite a bit of coffee on a regular basis, I would no doubt have a number of these on hand. Again, I have a sneaking suspicion that a box of these aged for a year or two could make these middle-of-the-road cigars move up closer to the head of the line. Still, if someone offered me a stick, I would happily accept with a gracious “Thank You”.

This was my first cigar into the world of Don Pepin Garcia. And It was and still is a great experience each time I reach for one! This is the one cigar I can not do without! Wonderful robust flavor, just the right amount of pepper, always a great draw and burn. This is a classic that remains tried and true!

After hearing all of the hype surrounding DPG, I was ready to be disappointed. This cigar, however, was worth every bit of hype. Well made. Strong, without being harsh. Wonderful flavors. Better than cigars I've paid twice as much for.

Good full flavor cigar.

Excellent cigar. Good from start to finish. Very well constructed, burns even with easy smooth draw. Nice stable ash and clouds of white smoke. Full flavor, with hints of spice, chocolate, and pepper

This cigar pre-light had little aroma, kind of a spicy taste when i chomped on it, and a pretty flawless wrapper. When clipped i noticed a very loose draw, but still smokeable.

Upon lighting it this cigar had a burst of aroma, unlike most cigars this one sprang out of the gates with aroma and taste. On my pallate it was well balanced with a woody aroma with sweet notes after about 2 inches in. It had thick smoke that was creamy and a very long smooth finish. The ash held strong but i dropped it at 1 1/2 inches even though it didnt wanna fall, and it was an extremely light grey with no mess very tight firm ash. The burn was perfect no tunneling or canoeing, i never once had to correct the burn. The nose hits out of this cigar gave me goosebumps and though it was pretty full strength it wasnt a long smoke and didnt leave me couch ridden after smoking. I smoked it to pretty much a nub and it never got bitter. I definitely will be buying more of these magical short smokes.

Possibly the best Pepin Garcia cigar

Admittedly, I am a big fan of Pepin Garcia's cigars. But, in my opinion, the black labels have a better flavor than either the blue labels or the Series JJs. They have that distinctive Pepin flavor, good strength, great draw, and even burn. The robusto (1979) packs a tremendous amount of flavor in a short cigar, and they have become a staple of my humidor.
