SQUAMISH (British Columbia) - A Squamish district councillor has tabled a new law compelling smokers to stub out around children when they are at home or while driving - even if they are just passing through on the Sea to Sky Highway.
"Let's say you're driving a car and smoking, and [someone] can see a child seat in the back. [They] can call the police," Councillor Raj Kahlon said.
This, he added, would include smokers driving through the district, 50 kilometres north of Vancouver, on their way to the Whistler resort or elsewhere. "Yes, [they could be stopped] if there are kids in the cars, though this bylaw is only within the boundaries [of the District of Squamish]," he said.
The new law would also ban smoking in such outdoor public areas as sports fields and bus shelters. Mr. Kahlon said his aim was to get parents and other adults thinking about how smoking affected children, rather than be punitive.
