The capital city's decision last week to ban smoking at all its indoor and outdoor recreation and sports facilities came as no surprise. With the mounting evidence on the dangers of second- hand smoke and the fact other communities have cracked down, it was inevitable that Charlottetown would follow suit. It's the right thing to do.
The new policy will come into effect Jan. 1, 2009, and will make it illegal for virtually anyone - participants, officials, coaches, players, parents, visitors and volunteers - to smoke or use spit tobacco, including snuff, chew or plug, at any of the city's community centres, sports fields and courts, parks, playgrounds, arenas and swimming pools. The policy will also forbid the sale of tobacco products in any of the administrative offices, club rooms, change rooms, washrooms, food courts, indoor and outdoor spectator viewing areas as well as within the perimeter of all facilities, including parking lots and grounds.
Smoking ban the right policy for today continues...
