The Derrick reports that some area businesses claim they'll be "suffocated" by Pennsylvania's smoking ban, which took effect on Thursday, September 11.
A law passed by the state legislature in July has banned smoking in many bars, restaurants, office buildings, schools, sports arenas, theaters and bus and train stations.
There are some exceptions to the rules, however, and that has led to some charges of unfairness. Exemptions are being awarded to a number of bars, taverns, portions of casino floors and private clubs.
Stacey Sanford, co-owner of Double Play Sports Bar and Night Club in Oil City, has been dealing with the frustrations of complying with the ban and what she sees as the unfairness of the exemptions.
"They're not making it fair - it's tough," Sanford said.
Sanford said Double Play serves food until 10 p.m., and after that the kitchen is closed. After 10 p.m., the establishment becomes more of a nightlife scene.
