In an AP report published at
nwcn.com, an Oregon smoking ban passed by the state legislature in 2007 will go into effect on January 1, 2009. The law will prohibit smoking in bars, taverns, bingo halls, restaurants currently with "smoking permitted" indoor bars, and bowling alleys.
Lawmakers concluded that protecting public health trumps concerns over a possible revenue hit -- either to bar and tavern owners or to the Oregon Lottery, which has 12,000 video gambling terminals in more than 2,300 retail outlets statewide.
