This week the Northern Californian City's Board of Supervisors narrowly approved a new ordinance that will effectively bring about a ban on smoking at each of its five public golf courses.
All that remains now for the ban to become law is for the new ordinance to be signed by City mayor, Gavin Newsom.
The legislation was initially approved last month by the Board's Neighborhood Services Committee as they worked at implementing a broader plan to limit smoking in all open public places.
A host of non-smoking golfers will be delighted that they will no longer be confronted by burnt out cigarette butts around the tees and on the greens, but some City officials are concerned that the ban may turn away business from their public courses.
Occasional on-course cigar puffers, Darren Clarke and Jose Miguel Jimenez, certainly won't approve.
