A story in The Dallas Morning News (www.dallasnews.com) reports that several anti-smoking organizations are pressuring Dallas lawmakers to expand the city's current anti-smoking laws. This action follows a City Council proposal to ban smoking in bars where patrons are still permitted to smoke legally indoors.
"It's the City Council's job and responsibility to protect the citizens of Dallas, and that includes protecting them from secondhand smoke," said Karen Hoyt-Potasznik, chairwoman of Smoke-Free Dallas, a group of health organizations and medical professionals. "We want them to move quickly."
Joining Ms. Hoyt-Potasznik at a scheduled 11 a.m. news conference today at Dallas City Hall will be John Connolly, president of the American Cancer Society's Dallas unit, and Amit Khera, director of UT Southwestern Medical Center's program in preventive cardiology and co-chairman of the American Heart Association's Texas State Advocacy Committee.
