Anti-Smoking Law Updates from Cigar Rights of America

Boston, Massachusetts

In a unanimous vote by the Boston Public Health Commission, that city which holds such a grand role in the history of ‘independence' and revolts against tyranny, now is the poster child for the overreaching hand of government. With the noted support of Boston Mayor Tom Menino, the Health Commission ushered in a new (and dangerous) era of regulation, with the banning of outdoor smoking on patios of bars and restaurants. That's right, we said “outdoor.” Also, the commission adopted sunset restrictions, essentially saying that in time, they will make the very existence of a cigar lounge “illegal.” Amazing!

The population of Boston is 599,351. This regulation impacts six establishments. Six! More amazement! Noted authorities such as Dr. Michael Siegel of the Boston University School of Public Health stated, “This policy is not going to save any lives.” Some of the more insightful comments, however, came from residents and observers, alike, following the commission's vote. Some of our favorites include:

“So much for Boston being serious about filling its convention center and bringing money to the city.”

“This is a disgrace. Our freedoms are being attacked again.”

“I am an asthmatic who is very sensitive to smoke. Despite that, I think this new ban is ridiculous. I know to avoid those locations.”

Dallas, Texas

On a 10-5 vote, the Dallas City Council voted to expand that city's smoking regulations. Beginning on April 10, these expanded measures will impact local businesses and the cigar loving public. No one summed it up better that Dallas Council member Tennell Atkins stating, “Because of this, people are going to lose their jobs.”

However, there are some variables to the Dallas action that offer some solace. If an establishment has 15% in tobacco sales, that opportunity to function as a cigar bar is open. Your local tobacconist shop is also exempt. But Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert joins our soon to come, ‘wall of shame...'
