By Kurt Van Keppel - President, XIKAR, Inc.
Here in Kansas City there is no doubt that winter has arrived in full force. Our region has experienced crippling snow & ice storms. However, I believe our defiant Midwest spirit will overcome this obstacle in no time. Our best goes out to all those affected.
When the ice thaws you can bet I'll be back outside enjoying a cigar. Diehard cigar lovers like me know what some others don't: cold temperatures bring out great cigar flavors that do not reveal themselves in warmer climates! But that isn't the only reason to brave the cold for a smoke.
My winter sanctuary is my own backyard. Nothing compliments a day of chopping firewood like a great cigar in my mouth and a glass of Syrah in my hand. Often I find myself burning a few extra logs in the chiminea so I can stay warm and relax just a bit longer. Frankly I couldn't imagine a more relaxing evening - well, maybe driving away from the city's glow for a huge bonfire and a smoke at XIKAR VP Scott Almsberger's house.
Contrary to nature's facade, winter is no time for dormancy. Email us your favorite place/time for a winter smoke to

Kurt's Cold Weather Smoking Tips:
If you think Fall is just the beginning of great cigar smoking seasons we couldn't agree more. Flavors we never experience in warm weather can really be brought out by crisp, cool air. Whether you are banished from smoking in the den or just walking the dog, enjoy your smoke in the cold with these quick tips:
1. Smoke smaller/shorter sticks. You'll get a quicker, stronger flavor sooner & you won't feel as bad if the cold becomes too much and you quit on it early!
2. If your cigar goes out, cut all ash off with an MTX Tool before relighting. The cigar will re-light faster and you'll get rid of any burning, ash flavors.
3. Use a XIKAR jet-flame lighter. Time is of the essence - don't waste it trying to strike a match wearing gloves! Hold the lighter in your hand for 10 seconds before igniting - this allows butane inside to get closer to room temperature and lights will come easier.
4. Walk around the block. You'll keep your blood pumping so you'll last longer and maybe run into that neighbor that still owes you a beer!
5. Take a hot cup of your favorite coffee, tea, Irish coffee, single malt, etc.
