A city ordinance — scheduled to take effect May 1 — bans smoking from most indoor public spaces, including restaurants and their bars. But several hundred people already have signed a petition that could result in a citywide referendum to repeal the measure.
Those circulating the petition say they hope to submit it to the city by Friday.
If at least 521 qualified registered voters sign the petition, the council would have to consider repealing the measure or set an election date to let voters decide. Such a vote could take place as early as May, making Rowlett one of the few cities in Texas where a comprehensive smoking ban has gone to a public vote.
