Rendell's budget boosts spending and broadens taxes

HARRISBURG [PA] - Gov. Rendell yesterday unveiled a $29 billion state budget for fiscal 2010-11, appealing to the bipartisan spirit of past achievements to help him continue to steer Pennsylvania out of fiscal strain.

Rendell, in his final budget address, called on the legislature to approve hundreds of millions in new education spending as part of an overall 4.1 percent increase in spending over this year.

He also is proposing a slate of new taxes that he said are needed to help offset economic shortfalls the state will face starting in mid-2011...
