Prometheus, makers of some of the world's finest cigar lighters, has some good news for cigar-smoking travelers. When traveling by air, you'll no longer have to rely on "cheapo" convenience store lighters or matches when arriving at your destination. The Department of Transportation has granted Prometheus with Special Permit (DOT-SP14415) for its Lighter Travel
Case. Now you can put one flammable gas fueled lighter or one liquid (
oil fluid) metal lighter in a Prometheus Travel Case in checked baggage, and travel with your lighter in commercial passenger aircraft operating in the United States.
The Prometheus Lighter Travel Case will be available in two colors: blue and black. Made with ABS plastic reinforced with fiberglass, the cases are crushproof, airtight, and waterproof up to 100 feet. Each case measures 4.8 inches wide x 3.7 deep x 1.7 high (122 mm x 94 x 43). The MSRP for Prometheus Lighter Travel Case is $19.95.
All Prometheus lighters (DOT T-0458) can be placed inside the Prometheus Travel Case, including all other butane gas lighters assigned with DOT T-number, as well as all liquid (oil fluid) metal lighters.
With regard to carrying the travel case on-board, DOT rules state that you cannot carry your lighter in the Prometheus Travel Case aboard inside the aircraft. One lighter per Prometheus Travel Case may be placed in checked baggage with a maximum of two Prometheus Travel Cases per checked baggage. So, if you put one lighter in each Travel Case, and two travel cases in your checked luggage, then you can carry two lighters in your checked luggage. µ
