BOSTON, MA -- Gov. Patrick has proposed dramatic tobacco tax increases in his Fiscal Year 2011 budget to fund the state's healthcare form plans. In his proposal,
cigars would be taxed from the current rate of 30% to 110%; smoking tobacco from 30% to 120%; and smokeless tobacco from 90% 110%.
At this time, this remains only as the governor's proposal and has not been officially introduced in the state legislature.
Lobbyists from the Cigar Association of America (CAA) are already working the State Capitol. To support and compliment their efforts, the IPCPR is issuing a Legislative Action Alert in opposition to the proposed tax increases.
