Cigar smokers will see their habit become more expensive next month, and cigar stores are getting ready for lower sales due to a federal tax increase.
"It's not going to affect my average smoker as much. It's going to hurt the little guy," said Steve Ajhar, owner of Ashes Cigar Tavern on Wickham Road in Viera.
Ajhar's average customer spends $6 per cigar and smokes four cigars a week, so the 35-cent-a-cigar increase will be a small percentage rise. The $1 cigar smoker, however, will see the cost go up by about a third.
"He's really going to take a beating on this," Ajhar said.
