In a nod to students' rights and amid concerns about enforcement, University of
Colorado officials have snuffed plans for a campus-wide outdoor smoking ban, and instead will launch a new campaign urging students, faculty and staff to voluntarily eliminate tobacco.
The new project -- an awareness campaign designed to educate the campus community about the dangers of smoking and tobacco use -- is currently in discussion between CU administrators and student leaders, and could be implemented by the fall semester.
Boulder campus officials had considered an outdoor smoking ban until earlier this year -- tobacco already is barred inside all campus buildings -- but decided that taking away students' rights was the wrong way to go about promoting a healthier campus, Vice Chancellor Frank Bruno said...
