It was an offer they couldn’t refuse.
Savannah’s best blues guitarists were offered a free cigar box guitar in exchange for donating their talents to a free concert that will be presented Aug. 6 at the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum. The invitation was extended by museum director Tony Pizzo.
“I was looking for a Southern regional or maritime instrument to add to our suite of available-material instruments here at the museum,” Pizzo said. “I came across the enormous amount of recent information and activity documented on the web and YouTube about the cigar box guitar.
“It’s an historic instrument with a strong Southern tradition, especially in the blues,” he said. “Bo Diddley, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Alberts King and Collins, Buddy Guy and the immortal Hound Dog Taylor all started out on them, as did Charlie Christian, Jimi Hendrix, Carl Perkins and Ted Nugent.”
