In a significant advancement for the effort to keep the U.S. Food & Drug Administration out of your home and local tobacconist's humidor, S. 1461 and H.R. 1639 has acquired two major new co-sponsors from the House and Senate.
U.S. Representative Fred Upton, R-Michigan is now a co-sponsor of H.R. 1639. As Chairman of the House Energy & Commerce Committee, it is an outstanding testament to the legislation that Chairman Upton has agreed to support the bill. Chairman Upton wrote the FDA well before H.R. 1639 existed stating that cigars ought to be treated differently, and this new development sends a great message to members throughout the U.S. House of Representatives.

During the last week, over 1500 cigar lovers from more than 60 different countries have visited the 14th Festival de Habano in Havana, the world’s largest cigar festival. At the closing event, six custom-made humidors by Cuban artists were auctioned off. The Cohiba humidor got the highest bid and was purchased by an Italian, who wished to remain anonymous.

By Gary Korb As our boutique cigar series continues, this week we look at Gran Habano Cigars. Though sometimes mistakenly underrated, this Honduran-based tabacalera produces some of the most flavorful handmade cigars at pretty reasonable prices. They also make some of the best wide ring cigars. First a little back story, then we'll take a look at their three foremost selections.
It all started in 1920. At that time Guillermo Rico's grandfather was growing black tobacco in Bucaranga, Colombia. By 1946, Guillermo’s father had succeeded him, and today the company is run by Guillermo and his son George. The main factory in Danli, Honduras was opened in 1998, and this past January, the Ricos opened a factory on the famed "Calle Ocho" (8th Street) in the "Little Havana" district of Miami, Florida. This is where the company will produce their new "Gran Habano Miami" cigars. The first cigars will be marketed under the name "Black Corojo." Made as an extension of their Gran Habano #5 Corojo series, the cigars will don the cigar industry's first Black Corojo wrapper.

By Chris Sikich | Indianapolis Star The dream of a statewide smoking ban may need a second wind.
