JEFFREY Eugenides is skulking around outside what he calls the only den of iniquity in downtown Princeton. It's a cigar shop called a Little Taste of Cuba, which is slightly ironic given that you can't buy a Romeo Y Julieta there because of the US embargo on trade with Havana.

(Press Release: PoliticalNews.me) [WASHINGTON, D.C.] U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) was joined by Senators Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) to introduce the Tobacco Tax Equity Act to close loopholes in the tax code that allow tobacco companies to avoid the federal cigarette and roll-your-own (RYO) tobacco tax. Because pipe tobacco is taxed at a lower rate than cigarettes, some companies have begun offering the option of purchasing pipe tobacco and allowing customers to roll their own cigarettes to avoid paying the federal cigarette tax.

Last month, I was sitting at my desk not bothering anybody when Warren, one of my co-workers, came in and handed me a slip of paper with a name and phone number on it. When I asked him what it was about, Warren said that a customer (we'll call him "Sam") wanted me to contact him about some cigars he had purchased on vacation in The Dominican Republic. The first thing that came to mind was counterfeit Cubans. (I had dealt with this kind of thing before on a number of occasions.) So, I called Sam, and it wasn't about counterfeit Havanas at all, but something much closer to home...

From Brian Berman | Cigar Rights of America In an announcement published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on the Federal Business Opportunities website (www.fbo.gov ), the FDA states that the agency intends to issue a “deeming regulation” sometime during the summer of 2012 to cover other tobacco products. This statement by the FDA was included as a part of a solicitation announcement in which the agency is seeking a contractor to identify a list of all tobacco product advertisements in the United States.
