Maroma Dulce ToroMaroma Dulce Toro

This is the time of year in New Orleans when I frequently find myself on the back deck first thing in the morning enjoying the pleasant zephyrs of late spring and sipping on a fresh steaming cup of café au lait. And if you like to pair a cigar with your coffee like I do, let me recommend you try the Maroma Dulce for both its flavor and reasonable price.

Maroma Dulce cigars are a Honduran mixed filler blend wrapped in an attractive light-brown Connecticut shade wrappers that reveal relatively few veins and surprisingly few flaws considering the price of the stick.

On clipping and cold draw, the Toro had a significant straw/grassy taste to it with just the slightest hint of lemon.  The draw, as you might expect from a mixed-filler, was very easy and just a bit more airy than I prefer but certainly not so much that the cigar would burn too quickly and hot.

The cap of the cigar is sweetened which I actually like in a cigar that I’m pairing with coffee. Based on the mildness of the cigar and the sweetened cap, I would probably not pair the Maroma Dulce with anything alcoholic but would select coffee or even a cup of hot tea.

On lighting, the cigar had a smooth toasty character that blended well with my accompanying coffee. As I continued through the first third, I could taste very subtle hints of caramel and cream.  The cigar provided ample amounts of smoke and the burn was reasonably even although I did have to give some attention to rotating the cigar to keep the edge straight.

Like most mixed filler cigars I smoke, the flavor didn’t develop much through the course of smoking and I occasionally had to deal with small bits of the mixed filler that the cigar surrendered, but since the Maroma Dulce Toro costs less per stick than most cups of coffee from your favorite shop, I’m willing look past such distractions.  I would recommend this cigar as a very good bargain and comparable in profile to the more expensive Gispert or Baccarat cigars.
