One of smokers’ last safe havens to light-up is cracking down on the habit. Cruise lines around the world are banning smoking in all public areas of ships, including in staterooms and on balconies. The announcement comes as cruise operators cite that only a minority of passengers smoke, and the rest who do not prefer having a smoke-free environment.

TAMPA -- Some groups collect cookies, clothes and toiletries for U.S. soldiers.
In Ybor City, they collect cigars.
"The guys overseas got to know that they are appreciated by the people back home," said Robert Alorda, a founder of the Ybor City Cigars for Soldiers program.
"They need something to remind them of home," Alorda said.

Earlier last month, I read in the news that the Dominican Republic had received a “designation of origin” for cigars made in that country.
Since I did not really understand what that would mean for the Dominican cigar industry, I thought I would go right to the source and ask my friends at La Aurora Cigars for an explanation.

Plus a brief interview with Ray French, author of How To Grow Your Own Tobacco From Seed to Smoke
By Gary Korb / Interview by Lola Honeybone
Have you ever thought of growing your own tobacco and rolling your own cigars? Over the years, I've met a few cigar smokers who do, and they told me they had good results. Of course, it takes time, effort, and patience. But if you do it by the book, like How To Grow Your Own Tobacco From Seed to Smoke by Ray French, you should get some excellent results.
Ray French is a graduate of Auburn University with a degree in Nursery Crop Production. He comes from a long line of farmers. His great-uncle, John Frederick Dugger started the Auburn University Old Rotation Farm Experiment in 1896, which continues to be one of the most productive farms in Alabama. Ray is committed to organic growing and passionate about promoting sustainable agriculture, both of which inspired him to write How to Grow Your Own Tobacco, and are covered extensively.
As many cigar smokers already know, Nestor Plasencia Jr. has been doing this for over 10 years in Nicaragua resulting in his line of Plasencia Reserva Organica cigars.

By Miranda Bryant | London Evening Standard (UK)
The cigar room of yesteryear, where gentlemen in hotels and clubs would retire for a smoke without disturbing the ladies, is making a comeback.
The smoking ban hit the tradition of the after-dinner cigar because there was nowhere warm and comfortable where guests could legally smoke.
But now London hotels are finding ways of creating cigar rooms outdoors, and some are designing them to be more appealing to women.

It remains unclear why Sen. Vivian Figures’ continued push to ban smoking in most public places in Alabama is stonewalled in the Legislature.
Second- hand smoke is especially dangerous to children, particularly those with asthmatic difficulties or respiratory infections, and isn’t the best pollutant the non-smoking population should be inhaling against their choosing. Why would anyone want to subject others to something that can be harmful? If people choose to smoke tobacco products, which are proven to be harmful to one’s health, that’s their prerogative, and they should have the absolute right to do so.
