Congressman Kendrick Meek relishes a good cigar -- Padrons are his favorite, he told Cigar Aficionado magazine in a 2008 profile. He hosts an annual cigar party and is known to hand out cigars to members of Congress and their staff, and the cigar industry has helped fund his recent campaigns, the magazine reported. Padron Cigars, a longtime family business, is headquartered in Little Havana in Miami. Meek's U.S. Senate Democratic primary opponent, Jeff Greene, attacks Meek for his ties to the tobacco industry in a campaign flier accusing Meek of standing with special interests. A month ago Brian and I attended the Famous Smoke Cigar Expo 2010. This two day event included a VIP dinner, free craft beer, excellent food, great cigars and much more. The video below is our attempt to document the event; hoping to give those that could not attend an idea of how the festivities went down.
Looking back on the event Brian and I are still impressed with just how well it was put together. It just seemed like everything was thought of. We’re not sure on the exact number of attendees, but it was much lower than others which made talking to the manufacturers and reps much easier. Story with video continues here

Texas country singer, novelist, humorist, cigar peddler and former gubernatorial candidate Richard S. "Kinky" Friedman hasn't written a new song in at least 20 years. But such tunes as "The Ballard of Charles Whitman" (the Texas tower sniper), "Ride 'Em Jewboy" and his cover of Chinga Chavin's "A**hole from El Paso" have brought him a cult following that extends as far away as Europe. "This European tour we did last year was really something," Friedman, 65, said by phone from his Texas ranch. "It was all sold out and we went to seven different countries. And the audiences were very young and they knew every lyric and they'd read every book. Story continues here

Amid much fanfare, CAO Cigars year-long Sucker Punch Sally's Lady Liberty motorcycle giveaway culminated last weekend with a huge motorcycle and cigar bash at the CAO headquarters in Nashville. All seven semi-finalists were flown in to Music City USA and put up by CAO at the posh Hermitage Hotel, in historic downtown.
Saturday was the big day where one lucky winner would be walking away with the keys to one of the most coveted giveaway bikes of 2009-2010. The party was in full swing by 10 am at CAO headquarters where the public was encouraged to show up and support the semi-finalists, have some food and drink and enjoy a cigar. Everyone that showed up got a CAO gift pack complete with cigars, lighter, cutter and SPS/CAO co-branded t-shirt. Story continues here

It seems that about this time every year I get a lot of requests from readers who are new to smoking premium cigars and looking for some good suggestions. It's one of the things I enjoy doing most, because there's no greater reward than helping turn someone on to a good cigar, especially if they like it enough to stick with it.
But recommendations aren't always for beginners. There are plenty of experienced cigar smokers who continue to seek out new cigars, whether they be new releases or cigars that have been around a while which, for some reason, they may have missed or overlooked.
For this article, I've compiled a list of "start here," or "try this one first" cigars. In any event, if you've ever been curious about the following brands, you may want to start with these (listed alphabetically).

They are called COSAS—an acronym for Comfortable Outdoor Smoking Area. And according to Jemma Freeman, the sixth-generation owner of the London-based Havana cigar importer Hunters & Frankau, “They are opening up in London at the rate of one a week.”
Havana may be the cradle of cigar making, but London is, arguably, the city where these golden-brown tubes of Cuban tobacco achieved their apotheosis as the gentleman’s postprandial pursuit. The bon vivant Edward VII ushered in a new era of pleasure after the death of his austere mother, Queen Victoria, with the memorable words, “Gentlemen, you may smoke.” A cigar was of course the constant companion of the greatest Englishman of the 20th century, Winston Churchill. And now it is Sir Terence Conran, the celebrated British designer, author, and restaurateur—seldom seen without a Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2—who wears the mantle of most famous living British cigar smoker.
