LAS VEGAS -- Several tobacco categories have already come under the microscope of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the general consensus seems to be that cigars' turn is coming. Insiders caution that the cigar industry needs to come together as a whole now, before the FDA acts.
"The politics of tobacco is the politics of diversion. We are too easy of a target. We set ourselves up for that because we never fought back," said Glynn Loope, executive director of Cigar Rights of America (CRA).

A look at the FDA's cigar and pipe tobacco status
By Thomas A. Briant | Tobacco E-News
FDA law, as passed by Congress in 2009, allows the agency to extend tobacco regulations to other tobacco products, including cigars and pipe tobacco. Currently, the FDA only regulates cigarettes, roll-your-own tobacco and smokeless tobacco products.
On April 25, 2011, the FDA issued a letter stating its intent to propose regulations on other tobacco products, such as cigars and pipe tobacco. The letter went on to state that these regulations may include company registration, product listing, ingredient listing, good manufacturing practice requirements, user fees for certain products and premarket review requirements for new tobacco products and modified risk tobacco products.

By Gary Korb I've been thinking about doing a series of features on specific cigar brands for a while now. Not just any brands though. The series would spotlight high-quality brands that are somewhat out of the mainstream. That said, I couldn't think of a better brand to start with than ACID.
IF THERE EVER WAS A "STANDARD" for making infused premium cigars, ACID cigars would be it. Officially introduced at the RTDA (now the IPCPR) Trade Show in 1999, the brand took off like gangbusters and created one of the most unique "cult" followings by cigar smokers, perhaps second only to Padrón cigars.

Apparently struck by the economic crisis in Europe, revenues of Habanos S.A. dropped 10.3 percent in 2011, despite a 4-percent rise in sales of Cuban luxury cigars outside the European Union last year, Imperial Tobacco Ltd. said in its 2011 annual report. The company had reported a 2-percent rise of Cuban luxury cigar sales for the six months ended March 31, 2011.
Even so, the Corporación Habanos S.A. joint venture, of which UK-based Imperial Tobacco holds half, doubled its after-tax profits last year.
