Michigan: Tobacco Tax Increase Bill Introduced in House

From Chris McCalla, Legislative Dir.

Tax Increase Bill Proposes Doubling of OTP Rate

MICHIGAN -- The State House is proposing a bill (not yet released) increasing the current OTP excise tax rate from 32% to 64%. As detailed in previous legislative updates, this bill comes as no surprise, as we have known for quite some time of such an attempt.

We are currently working for two outcomes--to keep the OTP excise tax rate at the present rate of 32% and to secure a cigar tax cap that apply to "large cigars" (the defintion includes handmade, premium cigars.

As more concrete details are released, we will update you.
