Q. I don't fly very often these days, but I'm planning a trip soon. Is airport security lately OK with lighters and cigar cutters in carry-on baggage, or do I need to check a bag to bring these things with me?

A. Even though they have let cutters pass through the security gate, I suggest you put your lighter in a checked bag as opposed to a carry-on. If you don't have a checked bag, you may have to leave the lighter at home and buy a convenience store lighter when you get to your destination.
Here's what I found on one of the TSA's information pages: "TSA will no longer ban common lighters in carry-on luggage as of August 4, 2007. Torch lighters remain banned in carry-ons."
After "the underwear bomber" incident, I would have thought all types of lighters would be banned on carry-on. But since you can put a torch lighter in your checked-bag, make sure it is completely void of fuel. You may also want to pick up one of those "TSA-approved" travel cases for lighters. I use one when I travel and never had a problem.
