How do they determine the cigar capacity of a humidor?

Q. I have a 300 cigar capacity end table style humidor. It has 2 top trays and I use them. I have cigars that I have been aging for 3 yrs in them (trays). I also have about 50 or so Churchill size cigars in the bottom. The rest are assorted sizes. I always wondered who determined what size cigar measured the amount a humidor could hold.
M. Martinez, Tulare, CA

A.
According to one of the humidor manufacturers I spoke to, cigar capacity is determined based on a box of 25 Churchills, or similar large cigars; roughly, a cigar that averages 7" x 49. The measurements are also based on the amount of cigars the box will hold without the humidifier, hygrometer, etc. Not all cigar humidors come with top trays, but top trays are calculated using the same criteria, and factored in to the total cigar capacity.

I also brought up this subject to several customers. All agreed that their humidors don't hold as many cigars as the manufacturers' claim, but they also admitted that they had a lot of wide ring and "odd shaped" cigars in their humdors, too.
