[WASHINGTON, D.C.] U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) was joined by Senators Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) to introduce the Tobacco Tax Equity Act to close loopholes in the tax code that allow tobacco companies to avoid the federal cigarette and roll-your-own (RYO) tobacco tax. Because pipe tobacco is taxed at a lower rate than cigarettes, some companies have begun offering the option of purchasing pipe tobacco and allowing customers to roll their own cigarettes to avoid paying the federal cigarette tax.

Last month, I was sitting at my desk not bothering anybody when Warren, one of my co-workers, came in and handed me a slip of paper with a name and phone number on it. When I asked him what it was about, Warren said that a customer (we'll call him "Sam")  wanted me to contact him about some cigars he had purchased on vacation in The Dominican Republic. In an announcement published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on the Federal Business Opportunities website (www.fbo.gov ), the FDA states that the agency intends to issue a “deeming regulation” sometime during the summer of 2012 to cover other tobacco products. This statement by the FDA was included as a part of a solicitation announcement in which the agency is seeking a contractor to identify a list of all tobacco product advertisements in the United States.

Earlier this month, the CRA (Cigar Rights of America) and the IPCPR (International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Association) filed a petition with the White House urging the Obama Administration to speak with officials at the U.S. Food & Drug Administration in support of protecting premium cigars from regulation by the agency.

Though he's now got his own company, Ortega Cigars, Eddie and Erik Espinosa - also now with his own Espinosa Cigars Co. - were the founding partners of E/O Brands. E/O developed and distributed the 601 brand and Mi Barrio cigars, among others, all of which are made by Don José Pepin Garcia.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – A rare cigar store Indian figure, beautifully carved in the 1880s by the renowned artisan Samuel Robb, sold for $94,400 at a three-day auction event held March 30-April 1 by Showtime Auction Services. The sale was held at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds, a venue that's become the site of choice for Showtime Auction Services.

The 5-foot-tall Indian chief figure had much of its original paint still intact and was in overall excellent condition. It was also the top lot of the sale.
