About a month ago Christian Eiroa and J.T. Guagliardo of Camacho Cigars, stopped by the Famous Smoke Shop offices to say hello. Since I'd yet to smoke one, I jokingly said, "You wouldn't happen to have any Room 101's on you by chance?"
"Actually, I do," said J.T., and several minutes later I was holding a Room 101 305 Robusto. So, since yesterday was Father's Day, I thought I'd celebrate by smoking it.
We're talkin' some mighty upmarket cigars here folks, starting at around $162 for a box of 25 Coronas, so my expectations were high, and I'm pleased to report that this Robusto did not disappoint.
The cigar was seamlessly rolled, well-packed, and the proprietary Honduran wrapper had a beautiful patina. I also love the black & silver embossed
band on this cigar, which looks like a piece of jewelry designed by Matt Booth, with whom these
cigars were created.
The cap came off easily exposing just the right amount of tobacco at the head, and the pre-light flavor had a rare fruitiness to it. It lit perfectly and the first puff was smooth, creamy, and was surprisingly complex, which made my eyes widen. Moreover, the smoke was mellow, emanated a great aroma, and produced a very long and firm ash. I was expecting this cigar to be spicier and much more robust like a lot of the Camacho fare, but once the cigar got going, it offered a cool, medium-bodied, yet very full-flavored smoke with an appealing underlying sweetness.
I paired the cigar with a bottle of Blue Moon Summer Honey Wheat. As the cigar worked its way past the first inch, I picked up more woody flavors, sweet tobacco and a trace of cocoa. Unfortunately, I had to put it down at the halfway mark, so I could have dinner. I finished it after my dessert with a mug of coffee and it held up beautifully. Not only did the smoke remain very flavorful, it had no bitterness from the relight, and maybe it was the coffee, but I picked up some dark coffee flavors in the last act, too. Even better, the ash remained firm and refused to tap-off until the just before the last inch.
All-in-all, a mighty nice treat for this Dad. (Thanks J.T.) Please share your thoughts either on this cigar, or tell us about your special Father's Day cigar by leaving a comment below.
