This is one of those cigars that tastes a different each time I smoke it. That's not to say this cigar is inconsistent; quite the contrary. It's just that I've smoked the La Aurora 107
Robusto at different times, paired it with different drinks, etc., and so I guess that's why I felt compelled to mention it.
In a nutshell, this is a full-bodied, robust smoke with a leathery, spicy and dark tobacco character. The
blend is composed of Dominican and Nicaraguan longfillers, a dual Dominican
binder, and a
sun-grown Ecuadorian
wrapper.
One of the first things you notice is the shimmering wrapper leaf and perfectly appointed triple cap. (Obviously, La Aurora wanted to make a good impression with these cigars that represent the company's 107th anniversary.)
For this occasion, I decided to pair my 107 Robusto with coffee. The pre-light flavors were nutty, woody and leathery. Once lit, the draw was effortless; perhaps a bit too effortless, yet the smoke was creamy and more on the mild-medium side with a mostly nutty flavor.
Once past the first inch, the smoke began to settle in, becoming more peppery with some leathery notes, wood, and a hint of sweetness on the finish that reminded me of bitter butterscotch. The cigar burned well, too, exposing a firm ash that held on almost to through the first half of the stick!
Rounding the second half, some of the peppery flavors would come and go replaced by a more earthy, full-bodied smoke with dark tobacco flavors. By the last third, it really pumped up turning into a dark, burly and spicy smoke.
I would have preferred a little more sweetness in the mix, but despite that, the smoke remained balanced and flavorful enough to literally smoke down to the last inch. (see photo).
If you like good, strong cigars that deliver lots of dark tobacco flavor without being overpowering, this cigar may be right in your wheelhouse. Well worth trying, especially for more experienced palates.
