CAO OSA Sol RobustoCountry of Origin: Nicaragua
Size: 5 x 50
Strength: Medium
Wrapper: Olancho San Agustin (from a proprietary 2008 crop)
Filler: Nicaraguan & Honduran
Binder: Connecticut Broadleaf
Presentation:
Box of 25 cigars
Appearance and feel: Nice looking cigar. Lime green, black and white
band looks nice against the light brown wrapper. Feels good. Nice and solid.
Paired with: Hazelnut coffee
Draw: Very good
Pre-light flavor: Creamy, light and a bit sweet and somewhat leathery.
Toasting & Light: Excellent
First puff: Somewhat leathery with a hint of nutmeg.
Retrohale: Earthy and smooth through the nose with a dollop of white pepper.
Base flavors: Woody and nutty with floral notes, sweet spice and a smattering of vanilla.
Aroma: sweet and woody
Burn / Ash: Mostly even-Steven with a somewhat flaky gray ash.
General Observations: The cigar had a nice creamy texture on the palate but the
finish is a bit dry. Flavors mostly of oak,
cedar and nutmeg. Cigar went out on me three times, but picked up right where it left off with no bitterness. Had to let it rest more between puffs in the final third.
Summary: The Olancho San Agustin wrapper comes from a 2008 crop in which the climate led to the forming of essential oils on the leaf. According to General Cigar, these oils contribute to the cigar's "robust and earthy flavor and full-bodied aroma." I found the Robusto to be a well balanced cigar with a mix of mellow, nutty, woody and semi-spicy flavors from end to end. The smoke was especially creamy with just the right amount of sweetness. This is an ideal smoke if you're looking for a right down the middle medium-bodied cigar with a lot of flavor. The flavors spiced up a bit in the last inch, and as you can see by the photo, I nubbed it.
